FROM THE PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Dear graduates, colleagues, friends, and supporters:

It is with great pride and affection that I welcome you to our 15th anniversary celebration and graduation. As I think of the 10 years that I have been with the HCI program, I am in awe of our founders, and excited about current progress and future developments. I congratulate each of you for the role you have had in helping our communities achieve linguistic and cultural access to healthcare. This program has more than doubled in its reach:- to the community - we routinely have hundreds of people attend our orientation (all potential students); to students - we generally have two classes per year; to linguistic groups - we now train at least 7 different language groups yearly; and to clinical service providers - we now have 12 training sites for internship placement. But most importantly, the quality of our graduates has also increased greatly. Now employers and providers alike look forward to working with interpreters who are ethically aware, linguistically accurate, and culturally competent. Our communities who communicate best in languages other than English: men, women, girls, boys, babies and elders will experience the relief of being able to express themselves and understand their healthcare providers. As we are posed on the verge of a major change in the access to healthcare with the new Affordable Care Act, Many Californians who speak limited English will finally be able to see a medical provider for routine care - and they will enjoy the fruits of all of our hard work when they utilize a qualified interpreter. I look forward to continuing the effort to grow and improve the CCSF HCI program, and to working with all of you in the future.

Nora Goodfriend-Koven MPH
